Tomb Raider series: the 5x3 formula before and after the sequel

Unlike branded franchises that replace their engine with every return, Games Global's Tomb Raider series keeps a compact 5x3 action-slot formula and expands it through paylines and bonus structure. Tomb Raider established that approach in 2004 with 15 paylines, low-to-medium volatility, wild and scatter symbols, and free spins. Its restrained rules make Lara Croft's adventure theme the frame rather than a substitute for readable slot mechanics.

Tomb Raider Secret of the Sword widened the format in 2008 instead of overturning it. It doubled the line count to 30, shifted the profile to low volatility and added a multiplier, substitution effects and a separate bonus game. The sequel is consequently broader in feature structure but gentler in risk, preserving the original's five-reel identity while giving bonus events more ways to alter ordinary symbol outcomes.
