Penalty series: football choices become reel mechanics
The Penalty series is Evoplay's football shoot-out franchise, built on quick choices, compact reward caps and selectable presentation before later entries add conventional slot mechanics. Penalty Shoot Out fixed that approach in place in 2020 with character or design selection, a take-or-refuse bonus decision and a 30x maximum. It plays around the tension of one decisive kick rather than a long reel-feature sequence.

The shoot-out code
- Football focus: penalty-taking supplies the visual stakes and the result cycle.
- Short resolution: the early games favor direct outcomes and modest ceilings over extended bonus ladders.
- Personalization: design or character choices recur across the shoot-out branch.
- Multiplier language: later versions make the potential return clearer through explicit multipliers and random boosts.
Penalty Series widened the early model to a 61x ceiling, while Penalty Shoot-Out: Street kept the compact shoot-out structure but moved it into a street-festival setting with multipliers and a 32x cap. Penalty Roulette is the notable side step: its 66x maximum reframes football pressure through a roulette-style result rather than trying to simulate a standard slot grid.
The larger mechanical break comes in the newer reel-based games. Penalty Shoot-out: Super Cup uses 4,096 ways, expanding reels, symbol collection, free spins and random multipliers, but keeps its maximum at 32x. Penalty Shoot Out: Cup Mania goes much further with a 5x3 layout, high volatility, bonus buy access and a 1,000x ceiling. That shift changes the franchise from a quick football decision format into a slot with a longer bonus chase.
How the risk curve widened
- Penalty Shoot Out: the foundation is a compact kick-and-choice game capped at 30x.
- Penalty Series and Penalty Roulette: the reward caps rise to 61x and 66x without adopting a full reel structure.
- Penalty Shoot-out: Super Cup: 4,096 ways and expanding reels introduce recognizable slot machinery while retaining a low ceiling.
- Penalty Shoot Out: Cup Mania: high volatility, bonus buy and a 1,000x maximum move the line into a substantially sharper risk bracket.
Penalty is best understood as a format migration held together by football's most compressed contest. The early releases resolve around selection and a single-shot outcome; the later games retain the shoot-out skin while adding free spins, expanding reels and purchasable bonuses. The constant is the kick. What changes is how much machinery Evoplay puts behind it.
